Introduction of Portage Lakes State Park
411-acre Portage Lakes State Park provides visitors with a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities suitable for all members of the family. Boating, hunting, swimming, and fishing are popular activities on the nearby lakes. Visitors can even gaze at the stars! The Akron Astronomy Club leases parkland to operate a small observatory. Seasonal special programs are presented.
Many visitors come to see the area’s unique flora and fauna. Tamarack trees, which are more common in northern boreal forests, are scattered throughout the park, along with patches of skunk cabbage and cranberry. Skunks, raccoons, white-tailed deer, and other animals find refuge in dense stands of beech-maple forest. During the spring and fall migration seasons, the park’s wetlands attract thousands of geese and waterfowl. Every year, mallards, wood ducks, and Canadian geese nest in the wetlands. Furthermore, woodcock, heron, hawks, owls, red fox, beaver, and muskrat are frequently seen.
Portage Lakes State Park Camping
There are 68 non-electric campsites and six electric campsites in this park, with both sunny and shaded locations. There are vault latrines and a dump station (both of which are free for registered campers). Pet camping is allowed in designated areas. There is a basketball court and horseshoe pits available. Registered campers can borrow games and sporting equipment from the camp office. The park offers two tepees for rent from May 1 to October 31.
