Introduction of Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park
Pennyrile Forest State Park, with over 15,000 acres of forest and 863 acres of park, is a nature lover’s dream, surrounded by lavish views of the Pennyrile Forest. This state park, located just outside Dawson Springs, Kentucky, is a must-see for your next camping trip. In a unique mountainous landscape, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Pennyrile Forest State Park offers a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking and birding to boating and horseback riding.
Pennyrile Forest State Park’s forest views are spectacular, with views of the 56-acre lake. You’ll love breathing in the fresh forest air while surrounded by native wildlife and bird species such as purple finches, Red-eyed Vireos, and raccoons.
After parking your vehicle at Pennyrile Forest State Park, you can explore one of the many trails that are scattered throughout the park. Birdwatchers should take the Clifty Creek Trail to see the Louisiana Waterbrush along the shores. Explore the one-mile horse trail before continuing on to more than 40 trails in the Pennyrile State Forest. Pennyrile Forest State Park is an excellent RV destination at any time of year.
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park Camping
Pennyrile Forest State Park Campground offers 36 pet-friendly RV and tent campsites on a seasonal basis. These campgrounds provide electricity and water. A bath house, restrooms, and two dump stations are available, and each site has a paved pad, picnic table, and fire pit. You will be close to hiking trails and a playground.
If you bring your horses on your outdoor adventure to Pennyrile Forest State Park, you can stay the day or overnight at the Equestrian Campground. There are eight RV parking spots available. Each location has a gravel parking area, a hitching post for up to four horses, and a fire pit. Water and electricity are also available.
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park Activities
Hiking
You’ll want to bring a good pair of hiking shoes with you because Pennyrile Forest State Park has nine trails of varying difficulty. Check out Campers Trace Trail, a less than half-mile loop around the lodge, if you’re looking for a nice walk or easy hike. Consider taking on the Pennyrile Nature Trail for a more difficult hike. This nearly 14-mile trail takes you past scenic overlooks and numerous bluffs.
Biking
Pennyrile Forest State Park is a fantastic place to bring your bike and explore the trails. You can bike down the Macedonia Trail, a six-and-a-half-mile loop that winds through pines and the Macedonia cemetery, as soon as you park your RV. These trails are not maintained by park staff.
Horseback Riding
If you enjoy horseback riding, you will love the opportunity to do so at Pennyrile Forest State Park. If you bring your horses in a trailer, this state park has an equestrian area that will meet your needs. A new one-mile horse trail near the campgrounds connects to Pennyrile State Forest. A hitching post can accommodate up to four horses. Individual picnic tables, lantern hangers, and combination fire/grills are also available in the equestrian area.
Boating
Load up the boat and head to Pennyrile Forest State Park for a fun-filled adventure outing for the day. If you don’t have a boat, don’t worry; you can rent a pedal boat, canoe, or kayak from the boat dock or marina. If you go to Pennyrile Lake, keep in mind that large motorboats are not permitted.
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park Location
Pennyrile Forest State Park is easily accessible by car or RV because it is located seven miles outside of Dawson Springs, Kentucky, off Highway 109. Park roads will take you anywhere you want to go within the park, from the lodge and boat dock to the beach, campground, and trails. There are no driving restrictions in the park for campers and RVs, so you’ll be able to get around easily, whether in your travel trailer or another vehicle.
Parking
There are five parking lots throughout the park to accommodate your rig and trailer. You can find parking near the cottages, beach, lodge, golf course, and trails. If you are camping overnight at the campgrounds, parking is available as well.
