Introduction of Mine Kill State Park

Mine Kill State Park, located in the scenic Schoharie Valley, overlooks the NY Power Authority’s Blenheim-Gilboa Reservoir, which is part of the Pumped Storage Power Project. Visitors to the park’s outdoor pool complex, which includes an Olympic-size pool, a wading pool, and a diving pool, are popular during the summer. Fishing, boating, hiking, disc golf, hosting a picnic in one of the park’s various pavilions, and playing on the park’s playgrounds and athletic fields are some other warm-weather activities. Hikers at the park can see rushing water cascading 80 feet through a narrow gorge down the park’s name, Mine Kill Falls. Sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are popular winter activities.

Visitors can also camp at Max V. Shaul State Park, which is only 9 miles away and has 30 quiet, wooded tent and trailer sites.

The Mine Kill State Park, including the pool complex, is completely free to visit thanks to the New York Power Authority. This is a pay-as-you-go park. Friendly to groups/motor coaches. Picnic shelter rentals are very reasonably priced. Reservations for picnic shelters should be made through the park office.

Mine Kill State Park Activities

The lower reservoir is stocked with trout, bass, walleye, carp, and pan fish, making for excellent fishing opportunities.

The reservoir built by the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project is ideal for water skiing, kayaking, and motor boating. To use the Mine Kill State Park boat launch, a free permit from the NY Power Authority is required. For more information, please contact the park’s visitor centre. Boating is permitted in the reservoir from early April to late September.

Bow hunting for deer is only permitted in the fall. The New York Power Authority issues hunting permits through a lottery system. For more information, please contact the Power Authority Visitor Center.

During the summer, mountain bikers can use the park’s eight miles of trails.

Picnic facilities include tables and grills, shelters, visitor recreation programs, and playing fields. The picnic area is open from early May to late October. Picnic shelter reservations will be accepted beginning January 1st. Only one shelter has power and running water.

The Long Path hiking trail will take you down to the lower falls before connecting with the other hiking trails that are open all year.
