The spring bubbles up into a limestone basin along the west bank of the Withlacoochee River, measuring about 82 feet broad, 25 feet deep, and with a 150-foot spring-run connecting with the river. Picnicking, paddling, and animal viewing are all possible in the scenic woodlands of mixed hardwoods and pines.
Madison Blue Spring, voted the best swimming hole in the country by USA Today, is a family favourite and a great place to spend the day.
Bring your binoculars, camera, and field guide to take advantage of the park’s excellent birding opportunities. Mississippi kites, red-shouldered hawks, great horned owls, Eastern whip-poor-wills, red-bellied and pileated woodpeckers, yellow-throated warblers, Northern cardinals, and a variety of other species are among the most regularly seen birds.
Starting 400 feet past the spring, fishing is permitted everywhere in the river along the riverbank. White and brown catfish, yellow bullhead, warmouth, bluegill, spotted sunfish, Suwannee bass, striped mullet, golden and coastal shiner, and gulf sturgeon are some of the most commonly seen fish.
The park features one of the area’s major cave systems, making it a popular diving destination for divers from all over the world. Only qualified cave and cavern divers are permitted; no open water diving is permitted.
