Introduction of Lake Sakakawea State Park

In close proximity to Garrison Dam on the south coast of Lake Sakakawea, Lake Sakakawea State Park provides a variety of amenities and water-based recreational opportunities. A full-service marina with boat rentals, a convenience store, fishing guide services, and boat and camper storage is available at the park. The greatest salmon fishing on the lake is accessible from the park through two substantial boat ramps. Throughout the summer, the park is the site of various fishing competitions. The fact that 45 of the more than 135 birds that may be seen in the park are listed as state uncommon species by the Natural Heritage Inventory may attract birders.

One of the three biggest artificial reservoirs in the country is the lake itself. It extends to Williston, North Dakota, over a surface area of around 368,000 acres and is 178 miles long. With the construction of Garrison Dam, one of six main-stem dams constructed and administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control, hydroelectric power, navigation, and irrigation, the reservoir became a component of the Missouri River system in the 1950s.
