Great Plains State Park, conveniently located between the foothills of the Wichita Mountains and the eastern shores of Tom Steed Reservoir, is one of the best places to visit in southwestern Oklahoma, so make sure you add this fantastic destination to your RV bucket list. Great Plains State Park, which spans 487 acres, is brimming with recreational outdoor activities such as rock climbing, swimming, and biking.Some trails will take you to the lakeside through rocky terrain. On the lakeshores, visitors can also see free-roaming deer and cranes. There are numerous historical sites to explore within the park for history buffs. Head to one of the lake’s many picnic areas for a picnic lunch with a view. Each campground has a reservable shelter pavilion, with Otter Creek having the largest.

Great Plains State Park, which stands at 1,426 feet, is surrounded by breathtaking views. You will enjoy biking through the park’s trails. There are 56 RV campsites available, as well as additional tent camping sites. While you can camp here for one or two nights, you can stay for up to 14 days to explore the park at your leisure.

Great Plains State Park Camping

Great Plains State Park has 86 campsites in two campgrounds (Mountain Shade and Otter Creek) that are suitable for trailers, RVs, and tents. Thirty of the sites are designated for tent campers, while the remaining 56 are designated for RVs. RVers will appreciate the 14 sites that have electric, water, and sewer hookups. The remaining 42 campsites are standard, with water and electricity. Many semi-modern sites have water access, i.e.

Pets are permitted to accompany campers as long as they are leashed at all times. Lantern holders, picnic tables, restrooms, a dump station, and grills are among the amenities. The campground has excellent cell reception. Some campsites are reserved, while others are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Because Snyder is eight miles away, you should bring your essentials with you if possible. Hobart and Altus, both about 20 miles away, are the nearest major cities.

Great Plains State Park Activities

Hiking

This park provides RV campers and day visitors with access to numerous hiking trails. You can hike Great Plains State Park trails if you have average hiking skills. Trails lead up to panoramic views of lush green scenery, rock outcroppings, and historical ruins. You must exercise caution because rattlesnakes are common in the park. Remember to keep a flashlight in your motorhome because it will come in handy. Because most of the trees are still small, there is little shade, so bring a hat and sunscreen.

Swimming

If you’re looking for a way to beat the summer heat, put on your swimsuit and head to the park’s swimming area. The beach is ideal for sunbathing and swimming. If swimming isn’t your thing, you can simply sit back and admire the beautiful blue waters of Tom Steed Reservoir.

Fishing

Tom Steed Reservoir, which opened in 1975, is a fishing paradise that offers excellent fishing all year. Great Plains State Park visitors can access both the eastern and southern shores of this reservoir via two boat ramps, a dock, and extensive shorelines. The reservoir is home to catfish, bass, and crappie. If you happen to be camping during the peak season, Tom Steed Bait Shop sells bait and snacks. If you enjoy boat fishing, you can always bring a boat in your campervan.

Mountain Biking

Great Plains State Park has some of the best biking trails in Mountain Park. The seven-mile granite trail system is ideal for cyclists. This trail, which is divided into three sections, can be difficult for beginners because it is narrow, rough, and rocky, so it is best suited for experienced bikers. However, inexperienced cyclists can still enjoy some East Loop paths.

Great Plains State Park Location

Great Plains State Park is located approximately two hours southwest of Oklahoma City. Great Plains State Park is located south of Hobart off Highway 183, just a few miles from Mountain Park City. RVs, trailers, and cars can use the road leading to the park. Visitors can park their trailers in a paved parking area near the entrance. Overnight campers are permitted to park at their designated campsites. The interior roads are in good condition and provide access to all areas of the park.
