General Butler State Resort Park, located where the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers meet, is an outdoor lover’s paradise with 300 acres of breathtaking river views, wildflower meadows, and a glistening lake.

This park, located just outside of Carrollton, was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1931 as part of Kentucky’s first state park. It was named after General Percival Butler, a Revolutionary War patriot. George Washington is said to have personally thanked the Butler family for their bravery and patriotism with a toast.

The park is rich in historical facts and tales, with roots dating back to the founding of the United States. The Butler Family Home provides visitors with additional information about the park’s history. It was built in 1851 and is now a museum displaying artifacts and letters from the Butler family’s history.

In addition to learning about Kentucky’s history, General Butler State Resort Park offers a variety of outdoor activities set in a very unique river landscape. General Butler State Resort Park’s scenic river views stretch for miles. Visitors will enjoy the fresh air while surrounded by running water, open fields, and a wooded forest. Use the five trails located throughout the park to explore the area. The Woodland Trail provides views of large tulip trees, birch trees, hickory trees, and native bushes for those interested in nature.

General Butler State Resort Park is home to a variety of bird species, including the Great Blue Heron, Northern Mockingbird, Tufted Titmouse, and American Goldfinch. General Butler State Resort Park is a vibrant Kentucky RV destination with activities ranging from hiking and fishing to birding and boating.

A large campground with 111 campsites with utility hookups and grills is available. Two central service buildings house showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities.

Open all year. There are no advance reservations. There is an accessible site available. Check-out time is 2:00 PM. Pets are permitted if they are restrained.

Birding

Several rare bird species can be found at General Butler State Resort Park. Visitors should bring binoculars with them because some of these species are quite small. The Great Blue Heron, Dark-eyed Junco, Wild Turkeys, and Canadian goose are just a few of the many birds that can be seen here. Stone Overlook, open meadows, and Butler Lake’s shores are among the most popular birding spots.

Fishing

Butler Lake, located on 30 acres, offers some of the best fishing in Kentucky. The lake is teeming with fish, including bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. If you didn’t bring your own rod and reel, the park has a loaner programme where you can check out the gear for free. Guests who want to go fishing, on the other hand, must have a fishing licence. Biking

The Fossil Trail allows you to explore General Butler State Resort Park by bike. This 4.5-mile loop takes visitors deep into the park, weaving through forested terrain. The path is intended for experienced cyclists, and riders must wear helmets at all times.

The Butler Lake Trail is an appealing option for visitors looking for a slightly less strenuous tour of the park. Another fantastic biking trail, the nearly two-mile Butler Lake Trail, provides a smoother ride while allowing guests to enjoy incredible park views.

Hiking

The hiking trails at General Butler State Resort Park range in difficulty. Guests looking for a more leisurely stroll will appreciate the quarter-mile nature trail connecting the Lodge and Camp area, as well as the half-mile nature loop in the campground. The 4.5-mile-long Fossil Trail is recommended for guests looking for a bit more of a challenge. The Fossil Trail will lead visitors deep into the park to Stone Overlook, Carrol County’s highest point.

General Butler State Resort Park Location

RVs can easily access General Butler State Resort Park. Off of Highway 227, near Carrollton, KY. Almost all park locations, from the Lodge and Cottages to the campground and trails, are accessible via local roads. There are no driving restrictions for trailers or RVs within the park, so guests will be able to navigate with ease regardless of vehicle type. With easy access to trails by bicycle and on foot, the park is ideal for being active and getting some gentle exercise.

Parking

There are several trailer and RV parking areas scattered throughout the park. Guests will have no trouble finding parking at the lodge, cottages, trails, or lake. For guests who intend to spend the night, the campground is the best option.
