Introduction of Gambrill State Park

Gambrill State Park is a dream destination for RV nature lovers, with breathtaking views of the surrounding area and tree-covered mountains, valleys, and spectacular wooded areas. This state park, located just outside of Frederick, Maryland, is a must-see for your next RV vacation. Originally opened in 1934, the park was built with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and many of the park’s buildings still stand today. This unique mountain landscape provides numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation. Gambrill State Park offers a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking and fishing to picnicking and visiting the Nature Center.

Gambrill State Park’s overlook views are spectacular, from the rising 1,600-foot High Knob to the cozy-family-style Rock Run area. You’ll enjoy breathing in the mountain air while being surrounded by nature, including local wildlife and snakes. Once you’ve parked your camper at Gambrill State Park, you can explore the park’s 16 miles of trails. Except for the White Oak Trail, which is only open to hikers, all trails are open to equestrians.

Do you intend to stay in the area? Gambrill State Park offers a variety of RV-friendly campsites with electric hookups, tent-only sites, camper cabins, and group camping areas. Gambrill State Park is an excellent RV destination year-round, but keep in mind that all accommodations are only available during the peak season, which runs from April to October.

Gambrill State Park Camping

From April to mid-October, camping is permitted in the upper portion of the Rock Run area, where a modern washhouse with showers and hot water is available. Up to 30 family units can be accommodated in the camping area. There are also four camper cabins available at the park. The senior citizen rate is only available on non-holiday nights from Sunday to Thursday.

Picnicking

Picnicking is a fun way to spend an afternoon at Gambrill State Park, and there are picnic facilities for groups of all sizes thanks to three rustic log picnic shelters. The shelters can be rented and include picnic tables, grills, restrooms, and playground facilities for your friends and family to enjoy during your RV vacation. Pets are welcome in the park’s day-use areas, and there’s plenty of space to spread out a picnic blanket.

Biking

Gambrill State Park is a fantastic place to bring your bike and ride through the mountains. After parking your RV, you can cycle down the Green Ash Trail, a two-mile steep-sloped trail ideal for a short ride. The three-mile Black Locust Trail is another excellent biking trail. You can conquer the steep slopes or level areas while admiring the breathtaking views of Frederick Valley to the east and Middletown Valley to the west.

Hiking

You should definitely bring your hiking boots because Gambrill State Park has over 16 miles of hiking trails to enjoy. Because of the steep mountain terrain that varies in elevation, there are trails for all skill levels.

Check out the White Trail if you’re looking for a short, easy walk. This is a one-mile hiking trail that allows you to take in the scenery all around you. This trail is also ideal for RV travelers with children.

Consider the Yellow Popular Trail for a much longer trail to just clear your mind and think on. This seven-mile trail takes you past stone overlooks, down the mountain, and far out into the park. All of the trails are pet-friendly and begin at the Trailhead Parking Lot on Gambrill Park Road.

Horseback Riding

If you are a daring equestrian, you will jump at the opportunity to ride the trails at Gambrill State Park. There are no corrals at this state park, but you are free to use all of the trails except the White Oak Trail. The White Oak Trail also allows you to park your horse trailer, but space is limited. Because of the rocky terrain and steep hills on the remaining five trails, they are only recommended for experienced horseback riders who are familiar with riding mountain trails.

Gambrill State Park Location

Gambrill State Park, located near Frederick off of US Route 40, is very accessible by car or RV for even novices. Local roads will take you anywhere in the park, from scenic overlooks and pavilions to picnic areas and trailheads. Within the park, there are no driving restrictions for RVs or trailers, so you will be able to get around easily whether you are in your RV or another vehicle.

The campground at the park closes during the winter months, but the park is still open if you want to visit during this time. Because there may be snow in the area during these months, you can call the park office to double-check that it will be open when you arrive.

Parking

There are nine lots throughout the park where RVs and trailers can be parked. You’ll be able to find parking near the picnic areas, the pavilion, fishing areas, and trailheads. Of course, you can park at the campground if you are staying overnight. If you want to get out and stretch your legs, park your RV at the picnic area and take a short walk along the One Mile Red Maple Trail to the rest of the park. Just keep an eye out for one short steep section.
