Florence Marina State Park, with only 173 acres of land, is small in comparison to other parks in Georgia. It makes up for it, however, with access to the massive 45,000-acre Lake Walter F. George, which fosters creative water adventures for people of all ages. Florence Marina State Park, located on the Georgia-Alabama border, was designed to provide a recreational area and create lasting memories for RV visitors from all over the country.

Visitors come every year to enjoy the cool waters of Lake Walter F. George and to observe the beautiful birds in their natural habitat. One of the park’s most popular attractions is the Kirbo Interpretive Center. It contains information on the land’s local history as well as Native American history and artifacts.

In the spring and summer, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy, such as fishing, hiking, and water skiing. The rest of the year is ideal for geocaching, birding, and learning more about the area at the Kirbo Interpretive Center.

The campground has very large sites, with up to 180-foot drive-throughs. There are 41 RV campsites available with full hookups and the option of cable access. The sites are paved, providing plenty of protection from the sun and unwanted attention from your neighbour. With warm summers and cool winters, the quiet parks relaxing atmosphere makes it a great place to just relax and unwind.

Florence Marina State Park Camping

This campground has 41 campsites that can accommodate vehicles up to 180 feet long. The sites have full hookups and plenty of shade to keep you cool in the sun. To provide some privacy, shrubs and trees are planted between each campsite. Each campsite allows a maximum of six people and two cars, with additional vehicles incurring a small fee. For late arrivals and other permits and information, there is a small check-in box at the campground’s entrance.

Each campsite has hot showers, restrooms, a grill, a picnic table, and a fire ring. The campground has an even distribution of pull-through and back-in campsites. You are not permitted to bring your own firewood into the park and are not permitted to gather firewood from your surroundings. This is done to protect the park’s natural ecosystem balance. At the park’s store, you can get firewood and ice. You can stay for a maximum of 14 days at a time and reserve a spot up to two months ahead of time in non-peak season and up to six months ahead of time in peak season.

Florence Marina State Park Activities

Fishing

Boats are permitted on the river, but they must be accompanied by a permit. To catch a largemouth bass in the shallows, it is best to use ChatterBaits and spinners. In the event of rising lake levels, the park may issue a warning to keep fishermen from becoming trapped in dangerous waters. If you are over the age of 16, you must have a valid fishing licence. If you intend to spend a long time on the lake, bring sunscreen and a snack with you.

Hiking

There aren’t many hiking trails in the park, but there are plenty of beautiful landscapes to stroll through. Some visitors prefer to hike along the lake’s shore or walk around the town’s ruins. Pets are welcome to accompany you on your hike. All pets must be kept on a leash at all times, and you must clean up after them. While out walking, remember to bring a snack and wear sturdy hiking boots.

Birding

Georgia is home to over 400 bird species, including a large number of cardinals and sparrows. Because of the park’s location, you can see egrets, herons, and a variety of other water birds. On your way into the park, pick up a birding checklist from the main office. Remember to bring binoculars and a map of the area so you can see all of the interesting birds. A good pair of hiking boots will serve you well on your adventure.

Water Skiing

Water sports are a big reason why so many people come to Florence Marina State Park in their camper or RV. Water skiing has grown in popularity. You must bring your own equipment, and there are no lifeguards on duty, so you are solely responsible for your own safety. If you are a beginner, use extra caution and remember to follow the lake’s rules and regulations. Wear a lifejacket while out on the water and have a good time.

Florence Marina State Park Location

Florence Marina State Park, located along the Georgia-Alabama state line, is a nice little getaway for fishermen and bird watchers. Highway 39 runs along the park’s entrance and will take you to the nearest town, about 20 miles away, where you can get fuel and groceries. The drive into the park is very smooth, and the roads are in excellent condition. A few low-hanging branches line the park’s entrance.

The park has three parking lots: one near the campground, one near the marina, and one near the miniature golf course. During your visit, you should either walk or ride your bike. Pets are permitted on the trails but are not permitted in the swimming areas.

In the event of inclement weather, such as flooding or rising lake levels, the park’s entrance may be closed. Before you go, check the weather and call ahead to make sure the park is still open. If you expect to arrive much later than expected, you can use the registration box at the campground’s entrance to check-in. The park enjoys warm summers and cool winters.
