Introduction of Elk Knob State Park

Elk Knob State Park has one of the highest peaks in North Carolina’s high country at 5,520 feet and one of the best trails in the park system to the summit’s spectacular views. At this relatively new park, additional trails are being developed. Despite its location in a winter-prone area, the park strives to remain open throughout the season and is the only one in the system to offer cross-country skiing (although skiers must provide their own equipment). There are primitive backcountry campsites for individuals and groups at lower elevations. Elk Knob is an excellent park for experiencing all four seasons in the mountains.
