Introduction of Duck Lake State Park

In Muskegon County, there is a 728-acre day-use park called Duck Lake State Park. The park runs from Lake Michigan’s northern border to Duck Lake’s northern side and has a massive sand dune. The landscape consists of open brush land, mature hardwood forests, and isolated areas of open meadows. The state acquired the site in 1974 after the Nature Conservancy bought it from two Boy Scout groups. The ruins of the previous scout camps were cleared away, and access roads were built. In the early spring of 1988, the park had its formal dedication. In May 2005, a new entry off Scenic Drive was finished.

Duck Lake State Park Activities

Boating

Duck Lake may be reached from the launch place. A tiny waterway flows into Lake Michigan, but boaters are unable to enter the lake because of a dam located beneath the Whitehall Scenic Bridge.

Fishing

Duck Lake is a great place to catch panfish, crappie, and bass. Early in the summer is the best time to fly fish for bluegill.

Swimming

On Duck Lake, there is a sandy beach, and a boardwalk around the lake’s edge offers access to Lake Michigan for swimming.

Hiking

An enjoyable trip through the forest and along the Duck Lake beach is made possible by a paved route.

Picnicking

The picnic spot is shaded by a forest. There are fire pits and barbecues.

Hunting

Throughout the regular hunting season, the park is accessible for small game, deer, and waterfowl hunting. Summer hunting is prohibited. A permission is required to hunt turkeys during the relevant season. Excellent deer and rabbit hunting is available in this park, while woodcock, pheasant, duck, goose, and squirrel hunting are also regarded as being quite good.

Metal Detecting

When carried out in a way that doesn’t harm the natural and cultural resources of Michigan State Parks or contravene relevant state laws, metal detecting is accepted as a legal form of recreation. The park personnel must examine any objects discovered and may decide to keep them for further examination.

Snow-mobiling

In the winter, motorised travel is prohibited in the park, although skiers and snowmobilers can still visit it.

Duck Lake State Park History 

The state acquired the site in 1974 after the Nature Conservancy bought it from two Boy Scout groups. In 1988, the park had its grand debut.
