Introduction of Custer State Park

Custer State Park is a 71,000-acre vacation haven full of adventure, wildlife, and scenic landscapes. You’ll see a wide variety of wildlife while exploring the park, including bighorn sheep, antelope, deer, elk, coyote, prairie dogs, and “begging” burros. The park also has one of the largest free-roaming buffalo herds in the country, so it’s common to encounter a “Buffalo Jam” while driving Wildlife Loop. Book the unique Buffalo Safari Jeep ride, which takes you off road straight into the herd, for a guaranteed buffalo encounter! Custer State Park and South Dakota have been named one of the top ten wildlife destinations in the world.

Sylvan Lake, the park’s “Crown Jewel,” Legion Lake, Center Lake, Stockade Lake, and the Game Lodge Pond At each, visitors can participate in a variety of water activities. The park also has numerous trails to explore, as well as the seemingly impossible-to-build Needles Highway, which winds through a breathtaking section of the park. It’s a year-round destination full of outdoor adventures that will leave you with a whole new appreciation for the beauty that South Dakota has to offer.
