Introduction of Colton Point State Park
RV Campers travel for miles to soak in the views of Pennsylvania’s “Grand Canyon” at Colton Point State Park, which is located just over an hour north of Williamsport. Visitors will be enchanted by the Pine Creek Gorge, a 47-mile ravine that features stunning vistas of Pine Creek cutting through the forested Allegheny Mountains. If you’re not put off by a long hike, Pine Creek provides a picturesque setting for anglers looking to catch trout, bass, and panfish.
There is no shortage of nature and wildlife viewing opportunities with such a beautiful landscape to explore. Foxes, raccoons, deer, snowshoe hares, and wild turkeys abound in the gorge valley. If you want to see the canyon from above, you can stop at one of the many scenic overlooks located along the easy Rim Trail. You can visit nearby Leonard Harrison State Park to see the other side of the gorge. Hunting for common game, such as pheasants and rabbits, is also popular in the park.
Colton Point State Park, located between Susquehannock and Tioga State Forests, is an ideal base camp for exploring the heart of northern Pennsylvania. You can learn about the area’s rich history by visiting the Civilian Conservation Corps remnants, which helped build and improve the park in the 1930s. If you want to camp, go to the rustic, first-come, first-served campground and let the sounds of the forest lull you to sleep in your RV.
Colton Point State Park Camping
The first-come, first-served campground at Colton Point State Park provides a rustic getaway for RV campers who value a simple escape among nature. Twenty-five primitive campsites are just steps from the Rim Trail, which leads to panoramic overlooks with views of the canyon below. Seven sites can accommodate RVs or travel trailers up to 38 feet long. Thirteen campsites are designated for tent camping only, and nine are only accessible by walk-in. If you are camping in a tent or on a walk-in basis, there is some parking within the campground as well as an overflow lot nearby.
There are no hookups, but there is a sanitary dump station at the campground entrance. There are also vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and potable water at the campground. Pets are welcome as long as they are kept on a leash outside the RV. Because reservations are not accepted and there are a limited number of RV sites, you should arrive early to ensure a spot. When you arrive, check in at the registration kiosk located near the entrance. From April to October, the campground is open.
Activities
Colton Point State Park Location
Colton Point State Park is located in northern Pennsylvania, close to the New York state line. Colton Point State Park is located off Route 6, about 20 minutes from Wellsboro. The roads surrounding the park are relatively easy to navigate, though some areas may be a little winding due to the hilly terrain. Because this area is heavily forested, keep an eye out for falling tree limbs. This also means that if you travel in the autumn, you’ll be treated to a spectacular display of reds and oranges on your scenic drive.
Parking
Several parking lots can be found throughout the park, including near scenic overlooks and picnic areas. If you plan to stay overnight, the best option is to park at the campground, but keep in mind that the road within the campground is one-way.
