Introduction of Calhoun Falls State Park

The Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area, one of South Carolina’s best state parks, is situated on a peninsula that protrudes into Lake Russell in the county of Abbeville’s northwest. There aren’t any waterfalls in the park proper, despite the name Calhoun Falls. Instead, the 318 acres of pine trees that surround the lake are part of this beautiful lakeside environment. The Calhoun Falls State Recreation Park is a beautiful backcountry park that offers a great opportunity to reconnect with nature and take in her best features. This is the ideal location to discover miles and miles of pristine beauty and natural variety since it lacks private development.
There are 100 tent camping sites, 82 RV camping sites, and 14 walk-in sites at the Calhoun Falls Campground. Within the Recreation Area, there are three separate campgrounds featuring both coastal sites and hidden areas for more rustic camping. This is perfect for families since it has a wonderful layout, a welcoming ambiance for people of all ages, and terrific play areas to keep the small ones occupied. Enjoy playing basketball and tennis on the courts, taking a picnic at one of the various locations, or choosing a riverside campground where you can spend the evening taking in the breathtaking sunsets over the river.

Boating

Private boaters have access to Lake Russell via a boat ramp. A marina with lighting provides 36 boat spots for hire. 32 of the 36 spaces have access to power, water, sewage pump-out, hot showers in the bathroom, and in-boat fuelling.

Camping

Reservations for camping must be made for a minimum of two nights. If you want to make a reservation and you have less than a day before check-in, you must do it directly with the park.

Hiking

Because of the variety of natural and cultural resources it has to offer, including possibilities for outdoor recreation and education, McCalla State Natural Area is administered as a unique resource park. This proposed backcountry park spans 6,239 acres and is situated in the northwest corner of Abbeville County, close to Lake Russell.

Fishing

Fish for bass, crappie, bream, walleye, stripers, and catfish at Lake Russell. You must possess a current South Carolina fishing licence.

Picnicking

There are two picnic shelters accessible for family outings or other large events, and picnicking is encouraged.

Horseback Riding

Ride your horse across South Carolina’s bucolic countryside and wildness. On the local paths that have been established, horseback riding is permitted. On the banks of Lake Russell, there are more than 35 miles of horse trails, and there are ranches close by that provide instruction and trail riding. Contact the Calhoun Falls State Park Office to register and obtain the gate combination in order to access the ten miles of horse trails in the McCalla State Natural Area.
