Introduction of Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park

The Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park is located on US 68, 48 miles northeast of Lexington, Kentucky. Blue Licks’ salt springs date back to prehistoric times and were once the centre of Indian life. Blue Licks is best known as the site of the Revolutionary War’s final battle in Kentucky. In May 1999, this 150-acre park was transformed into a polished resort park. It has hiking trails, an 18-hole miniature golf course, a junior Olympic-sized pool, a nature preserve, a gift shop, picnic areas, and an interesting Pioneer Museum with mastodon bones and pioneer artifacts.

The park lodge has 32 rooms with private balconies or patios and all the amenities you could want. Kentucky handcrafts, books, confectioneries, and a variety of other items are available in the gift shop. There are also cottages for rent.

The federally endangered Short’s Goldenrod grows in Blue Licks. This plant is protected in Blue Licks’ 15-acre nature preserve. Short’s Goldenrod has a long history of being associated with the Buffalo Trace hiking trail, which is the trampled remains of an ancient buffalo path.

Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park Camping

The campground offers 51 campsites with utility hookups, a dump station, and a central service building with showers and restrooms. From November 18th to March 31st, the campground is closed. Pets are permitted if they are restrained.

Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park Activities

Bird watching

Spring is an excellent time to see Snipe, Solitary Sandpipers, and Killdeer. Summer is the best time to see hawks like the Sharp-shinned, Cooper’s, Broad-winged, Red-tailed, and American Kestrel. Spring and fall are both excellent times to see migrating warblers. Wood ducks, migratory and nesting Emberizidae Parulinae such as Prothonotary and Cerulean Warblers, and both wood thrushes Acadian and flycatchers can be seen in the ravines along the Licking River. Red-headed woodpeckers and Warbling Vireos can be seen frequently along HW 68 on the Heritage Trail.

Hiking

The River Trail is a one-mile loop trail that leads to the Licking River, near where Daniel Boone and his men were captured by Shawnee Indians during a saltmaking expedition. The Buffalo Trace (.2 mile) hiking trail follows the trampled remains of an ancient buffalo path. The Savannah Loop (.5 mile), Indian Run Loop (.8 mile), and Blue Licks Heritage Trail are among the other trails available (2 miles).

Picnicking

Tables, grills, and playgrounds are scattered throughout the park, making it ideal for a picnic. The park has two picnic shelters, one of which has restrooms, that can be reserved in advance. The lodge has three meeting or banquet rooms: the Daniel Boone Room, which seats 175, the Pavilion, which seats 225, and the Arlington Room, which seats up to 125 people.
