Introduction of Moreau Lake

The lake of Moreau Lake State Park is surrounded by hardwood forests, pine stands, and rocky ridges. Picnic areas and a gazebo overlooking the lake are shaded by tree groves. Wooded campgrounds are peaceful and isolated, with amenities for both group campers and tent and trailer campers. On a daily basis, two pavilions with a capacity of 100-120 people each and a 20’x30′ tent with a capacity of up to 50 people can be reserved. The sandy beach, nature, hiking and cross-country ski paths, boating, fishing, and ice fishing activities, and closeness to Saratoga Springs and Lake George make the park appealing to visitors.

In addition, hunting is permitted in certain portions of the park. Every hunt is a struggle because of the different terrain and deep woodlands. Do you want to unwind on the water? Enjoy the peaceful shores of the lake in a canoe or kayak. On a hot summer day, head to the beach to cool down.

The park contains about 150 campsites, many of which are within walking distance of the lake. Moreau Lake State Park has something for everyone, no matter how long you plan on staying in your RV.

Moreau Lake State Park Camping

The park has 145 campsites. Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table. Although no hookups are available, generators are authorized.

The campsites are divided into five major loops that run along the lake’s edge. All loops contain bathrooms, showers, and a dump station. The majority of the sites allow an RV length of no more than 30 feet, with a few exceptions allowing RVs up to 40 feet. Housepets are permitted in all campsites but not in the cottages or park buildings.

The park is open all year, although campground reservations are only available from May to December. All reservations must be made at least one day before your arrival.

Moreau Lake State Park Activities

Boating

Moreau Lake has acres of pure water to enjoy. In the fall, take a canoe out on the lake and enjoy the picturesque shoreline as the colors begin to change. Bring a kayak and get some exercise over the summer. If you want a more engaged sailing experience, you can even bring a sailboat.

There are boat rentals available, so you don’t have to bring your own. On the lake, no engines of any type are permitted.

Moreau Lake Fishing

Don’t forget to bring your fishing gear with you in the campervan. The lake is an excellent fishing location for fisherman of all skill levels. The lake is teeming with a diverse range of species, making for superb fishing throughout the year.

The lake is well-known for its largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing. During the summer, the deep lake waters provide refuge for trout, making this an excellent time to explore the park. And because the county manages the populations, there are always fish to be discovered.

Hunting

Every time hunters visit Moreau Lake State Park, they will find enough to enjoy. The deer hunting in particular stands out, as the remote woodlands and varied terrain provide consistently demanding hunts. Only archery, crossbow, and muzzleloading are permitted for deer hunting.

Hiking trails pass through many of the prime hunting sites, so exercise extreme caution. In addition to a New York state hunting license, all hunters must get a park permit. Hunting areas are strictly enforced, so double-check with the park’s map to ensure you’re not hunting in a restricted area.

Ice Fishing

Still want to fish as the lake freezes over in the winter? Bring your ice fishing gear and head out into the frozen waters in your camper. There are still a lot of fish in the water. Just be patient because they are much less active this time of year.

Because the park cannot ensure the safety of the ice, you must ice fish at your own risk. Because ice conditions change fast, always make sure you have the most up-to-date information on ice thickness. Also, dress appropriately because the temperature drops considerably out on the lake.

Bird Watching

The trees that surround the lake are home to a diverse range of bird species, making the park an excellent site for bird watchers of all skill levels. The bird watching is wonderful all year, but especially in the spring and fall, when there are more species in the park.

There is numerous fantastic bird-watching societies in New York that provide lists of birds found in the area as well as field guides. Make sure you get one before visiting the park so you know what to look for and have more information on the species found there.

Location

Moreau Lake State Park, located just north of Albany, is conveniently accessible from a number of important communities in the region.

The park is close up the road if you’re coming from Albany. Take I-87 to the park and you’ll be there in about 45 minutes. The park is also not far from Syracuse. Take I-90 and you’ll be there in about two and a half hours.

Taking I-90 out of Boston, the park may be reached in a little more than three hours. Moreau Lake State Park is also about three hours’ drive from New York via I-87.

When you arrive in the park, you’ll notice well-kept roads leading directly to all of the campers. Don’t worry about RV restrictions; you’ll be able to access all of the park’s main areas.

Parking is available for the vehicles and the fee is up to $8 according to the capacity of the place.
