While construction was underway on a new Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay, which would connect St. Petersburg and Sarasota, the old bridge was converted into the world’s longest fishing pier.
Anglers appreciate the convenience of being able to park their vehicles within a few feet of their favourite fishing location. The bridge is illuminated at night so that anglers can see where they are rigging their lines and baiting their hooks, as well as get a good look at their catch. After the sun goes down, the light attracts a large number of different species of fish.
Snook, tarpon, grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper, pompano, and a variety of other species are frequently caught. It is possible to purchase food and beverages as well as bait and fishing supplies.
