Introduction of Lake Arrowhead State Park

14 miles southeast of Wichita Falls in Clay County, on 524 acres, is Lake Arrowhead State Park. The region was purchased from the City of Wichita Falls in 1970 as part of the State Parks Bond Program, and it was made public that same year. The park provides lake swimming on an unsupervised beach, water skiing, disc golf, picnics, camping, nature study, hiking, horseback riding, and boating. It also offers fishing and participates in the “Loan A Tackle Program.”

A reservoir on the Little Wichita River, Lake Arrowhead has 106 miles of coastline and a surface area of around 16,200 acres. The City of Wichita Falls constructed the lake primarily as a water source, but it is also a significant recreation area for the North Central Plains.

Campsites in Lake Arrowhead State Park

Burkburnett / Wichita Falls KOA

The family-friendly Burkburnett/Wichita Falls KOA campsite is located in Burkburnett, Texas, close to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Native American museums, and Fort Sill Army Base. This might be one of your favourite getaway locations because it has a distinctive saltwater pool with a slide, a playground for the kids, and bike rentals for the entire family. There are shaded spots as well as Wi-Fi and cable accessible. Bring your dog along and enjoy watching them play at the dog park. There are also enjoyable games for kids of all ages, like horseshoes and tetherball. You may buy basic food and camping equipment in the camp store, so you’ll be prepared for your trip.

Equestrian Campground

The four-site horse campsite is located next to the disc golf course, away from the lake. In comparison to the other RV sites, it is a little farther away and a little roomier. Each campsite further features a fire ring, a picnic table, and 50-amp power and water hookups. Since each campground includes a horse tie rail reminiscent to the ones Roy Rogers used, campfires give these locations a distinctly Old West flavour. A corral and a covered horse stall are also present.

Lake Arrowhead Water-Only Sites

This 19-site campsite is available at Lake Arrowhead State Park along a section of beachfront that runs from Prairie Dog Town to the spillway for those who like to be nearer to the activity. A few locations, most notably #59, feature some extremely lovely lake views. All of the swimming, fishing, and boating activities are close by and accessible on foot. Every campsite includes a water hookup and some shade, making it perfect for unwinding. As long as your pet is on a leash, you are welcome to visit these locations. This campsite doesn’t offer power, but the sites can accommodate vehicles up to 53 feet long. These locations provide covered picnic tables and fire rings with grills. There are local restrooms, showers, and a trash station.

Lake Arrowhead Electric Campground

Large RVs and trailers may park here, and it has 50-amp power service as well as water hookups. These asphalt campsites can accommodate everything from a 45-foot RV to a 117-foot trailer, and everything in between. Up to eight persons and three cars are allowed at these pet-friendly campsites. On certain grounds, tent camping is also permitted. While some websites are back-in, some are pull-through.

Every campsite has a fire ring with a grill, a picnic table, and in some cases, a shelter. There should be at least some shade in each of these locations. The campground is quite as it is separated from the lake and lake amenities by a park road. The campground’s centre has a sizable bathroom/shower facility, and a sizable RV dump station is just a short distance away.

Lake Arrowhead Primitive Tent Sites

Five walk-in, tent-only primitive sites are available in Lake Arrowhead State Park, all of which are close to the lake. These rustic campsites allow pets and may accommodate up to eight people with two automobiles. Each site comes with a fire ring and a grill. Showers, water fountains, and bathrooms are all within 800 feet of campers. The Onion Creek walking route is close to these somewhat shaded campsites.

Boating

One floating boat dock and one boat ramp are available.

Fishing

The park participates in the “Loan A Tackle Program” and offers fishing opportunities (the park lends out fishing tackle to visitors). Crappie, perch, catfish, and bass are common fish. Every year on the first Saturday in June, there is a kids’ fishing competition and an adult rough fish competition.

Hiking

On around 300 acres, this location provides 5 miles of multi-use trails that are available to both hikers and bikers. The routes travel across grassy, level terrain.

Picnicking

All across the park, there are covered picnic areas.

Horseback Riding

On around 300 acres, this location provides 5 miles of multi-use trails that are available to both hikers and bikers. Flat, grassy landscape is traversed by the paths. Each of the 4 campsites contains a picnic table, a fire ring, a tie rail, and a picket line in addition to water and power. Parking and bathrooms are accessible near the group building. There are restrooms with showers in the centre campsite. Visitors are required to bring their own horses.

With water, 50 amp power, a picnic table, a fire ring, a tie rail, a corral, and 4 covered stalls, there are 4 equestrian campsites available.

Golfing

There is a disc golf course with 18 holes.

Water Sports

Water activities like floating and fishing are very common.

Birding

It’s easier to view birds in the park’s northern section near the spillway since it’s a little higher than the lakefront areas. Look for geese, ducks, northern shovelers, American wigeons, doves, roadrunners, and snipes throughout the fall and winter. There are numerous woodpeckers, owls, hawks, mockingbirds, wrens, bluebirds, and other flying creatures farther inland. You can check off the birds you see by printing a list of the birds that are present in the region during the time of year you visit the park. Binoculars will improve your view, so bring them along.

Transportation

Driving

Highway 287, the primary route between Fort Worth and Wichita Falls, is not far from Lake Arrowhead State Park. Roadway 287 is a four-lane divided highway with exceptional visibility and almost any hills that is primarily straight. From Fort Worth, go north, passing through Decatur, Bowie, and a number of other charming communities. You won’t even have left town if you’re coming from Wichita Falls before you have to turn around.

A rather remote place to get away from it all is Lake Arrowhead. RV travellers have the option of travelling directly from Jolly or taking the scenic route through Henrietta, where the road follows the shore of the lake and provides stunning views all along the way.

There is a sizable parking lot next to the main boat launch and bathing area as you arrive at the park. Near Prairie Dog Town and the disc golf course, there is additional parking.
