Introduction of Brimley State Park

Brimley State Park is a quaint 151-acre state park on Whitefish Bay’s sandy shores. The park, which is located at the eastern end of Lake Superior in Michigan, was established in 1923 and is one of the Upper Peninsula’s oldest state parks. Because of its age, it is a popular destination for family traditions, and campers visit this family-friendly campground all year.

Brimley State Park offers plenty of outdoor recreation, including grassy lawns and a tranquil lake. Guests can spend their days fishing, boating, and swimming in Lake Superior’s warm waters, or hiking and skiing on the park’s scenic trails. The campground is ideal for traditional campers and RVs, with well-paved biking trails and a playground for children. Picnics and wildlife viewing are popular activities for families.

Brimley State Park is a popular year-round RV camping destination, but please be aware that a Recreation Passport is required to enter the park. Guests can easily apply for these online. Reservations are required during the summer, especially for campers with large rigs.

Brimley State Park Camping

Brimley State Park Main Campground is a popular destination for many people. The campground has 237 modern campsites with electrical hookups, with a limited number of sites offering 50 amps. Please keep in mind that several of the campsites are only for tent camping. There are some pull-through spots available for RVs and large rigs. However, the majority of the campgrounds are smaller and more compact.

Water filling stations and a dump station are among the campground amenities. Campers can also use three restrooms, which include hot showers and vault toilets. A small IGA store is directly across from the campsite, where campers can pick up any essential items they may have forgotten. Reservations for camping can be made up to six months in advance, and day-use shelters can be made up to a year in advance. Due to the popularity of the park, guests are not permitted to stay for more than 15 consecutive nights. Pets are welcome but must be leashed at all times.

Brimley State Park Activities

Hiking

Brimley State Park does not have any designated or marked hiking trails that are maintained by park staff. If guests decide to go exploring in the park forest, they must exercise extreme caution. Campers and day visitors alike are welcome to hike along the abandoned railroad corridor that runs alongside the park. Furthermore, many visitors find the shoreline along Lake Superior’s Whitefish Bay to be a peaceful, relaxing spot for leisurely strolls along the beachfront. At low tide, keep an eye out for any hidden treasure or sea life that may appear.

Hunting

While hunting is not permitted within the boundaries of Brimley State Park, campers and visitors can visit the nearby State Forest Land to the south for some excellent hunting. Snowshoe hare, deer, and ruffed grouse are common catches. Keep in mind that this is bear country, and black bears are frequently spotted in the area. Please keep in mind that every resident and nonresident who hunts in any of Michigan’s state parks must have an annual base license. To hunt here, all prospective hunters must have a valid and current base license.

Fishing

One of the most popular activities at Brimley State Park is fishing. Anglers can anticipate finding a nice, peaceful spot along the shore or taking their boat out onto Lake Superior for deeper fishing. In the nearby rivers and bays, common catches include whitefish, perch, northern pike, and walleye. Visitors seeking a greater challenge should venture outside of the park to one of the many nearby trout streams. Please keep in mind that a license is required to fish in any of Michigan’s state parks.

Water Recreation

Brimley State Park visitors can expect a plethora of water activities. For those who want to launch their own watercraft onto Lake Superior, the state park has a boat ramp. Water sports such as water skiing and tubing are popular among families. The sandy beach is a great place to swim in the summer months for those who do not own a boat. Brimley, in fact, has some of the warmest swimming areas on Lake Superior. Make sure to follow all of the park’s swimming rules. Pet owners should be aware that pets are not permitted on the beach at Brimley State Park.

Brimley State Park Location

Brimley State Park is easily accessible to visitors by car or boat. The park is easily navigable and has paved roads that are great for biking. It is located 30 minutes from Sault St. Marie along the coast of Lake Huron. The park has no driving restrictions, but previous campers have warned of tight campsites that can make maneuvering a large rig difficult. Campers with large rigs should book ahead of time and arrive early to secure the larger, limited-availability spots.

It is recommended that guests explore the park using a small, secondary car or bicycles. Biking and walking are the best modes of transportation because they can take advantage of the many trails and paths that connect park amenities, whereas vehicles are restricted to the roads.
